Where to place a security camera

We'll advise how to choose the right location for a security camera so the field of view is optimal and installation problem-free.

How to place a security camera correctly

  1. Choose a security camera with suitable parameters for your project.
  2. Account for the camera's focal length and pick one with the right lens and angle of view.
  3. Choose a spot with a clear view, with nothing in the way (gutters, lightning rods, ledges, etc.). Otherwise you may set yourself up for night-vision IR-range trouble.
  4. Mount the camera high enough that it's not easy to damage. If that's not possible, choose a DOME camera, which is more vandal-resistant.
  5. If you have nowhere to hide the join between the supply cable and the camera lead, get a matching cable box for the camera.
  6. Try to follow the rule of circular or cross placement — one camera should see another.
  7. TIP: If you can, connect the camera to the system on a longer cable and test whether the chosen spot really works before mounting it. If you can't, climb a ladder to the intended position and verify visually that nothing will obstruct the camera. You can also take a photo with a phone and check whether the spot is suitable.

Choosing the right spot for a security camera is not difficult — you mostly need imagination combined with the requirements for the area to be monitored.
