Privacy masks: privacy protection in practice

A privacy mask permanently covers selected areas of the camera frame. Learn how this feature works in PATRONUM systems and why it's key for GDPR compliance.

What is a privacy mask?

A privacy mask is a feature that permanently covers selected image areas. The camera neither displays nor stores the detailed image in these zones — instead, a solid coloured square or rectangle is shown. A typical example is covering windows of a neighbouring house, a public road or any other area that must not be monitored for legal or ethical reasons.

Why is the privacy mask important?

The privacy mask plays a key role in legal compliance (e.g. GDPR) and in respecting personal privacy. Thanks to it the camera can be aimed at the protected object without recording sensitive places that don't belong under monitoring.

Main benefits

  • Privacy protection — residents of neighbouring properties or passers-by can be sure their privacy will not be invaded.
  • Legal compliance — PATRONUM camera systems meet legislation requirements that prohibit monitoring public space without permission.
  • Flexibility — the user can configure multiple masked areas and adjust their position any time.

How does the privacy mask work in PATRONUM systems?

Setting up privacy masks is easy and intuitive. In the recorder interface or directly on the camera, with a few clicks you mark the areas to be hidden. The masks apply in real time — visible both in live view and recording.

PATRONUM camera systems also let you create multiple zones at once, so you can mask, for example, all windows in the frame and parts of the public road, while the protected object remains fully observable.
