Online camera system monitoring — costs and requirements

Find out what online monitoring of a camera system costs and what internet speed you need for smooth video streaming.

Online monitoring, configuration and playback of recordings

  • Via P2P based on the unique device code (no public IP needed) — completely FREE.
  • Via a public IP address — public IP is charged by your internet service provider.

Local recording storage

  • The recording device or IP camera must be equipped with a hard disk or SD card — a one-time purchase. Both devices also work without internal storage.

Remote recording storage (CLOUD)

  • FTP, Google Drive etc. — also FREE, or charged by the cloud storage provider.
  • Virtual recorder (cloud-based recording storage) — paid + a public IP address is required.

Software

  • Software for remote management and monitoring is provided FREE with device purchase, with no licensing fees.

In a world of ever-increasing security and monitoring needs, online camera system monitoring is becoming a necessity for many households and businesses. Whether protecting property or monitoring work processes, a quality internet connection is the foundation for effective use of these technologies. In this article we look at what internet speed is needed for smooth, uninterrupted online camera system monitoring and how camera resolution affects this requirement.

Basic connection requirements

Internet connection speed is critical for streaming video from a camera system without delay and at high quality. As a basic guideline, the minimum upload speed at the camera installation site and download speed at the monitoring device should be at least 2 Mbps per camera for standard resolution (SD). For higher-resolution systems such as Full HD (1080p), the connection speed should be at least 5 Mbps per camera. If your systems use ultra-high resolution (4K), an internet speed of 8 Mbps per camera is recommended.

Resolution of 1 camera — H.265+ compression Required upload/download
2.0 Mpx 2 Mbps
5.0 Mpx 4 Mbps
8.0 Mpx 6–8 Mbps

Effect of camera resolution

Camera resolution has a direct impact on the amount of data that needs to be transmitted over the internet. Higher resolution means more detail and therefore a larger data stream. Higher-resolution systems therefore require a faster internet connection to stream video in real time without dropouts or quality reduction.

Connection for multiple cameras

If your monitoring system contains multiple cameras, you must multiply the internet connection speed by the number of active cameras to ensure sufficient capacity for streaming them simultaneously. For example, with a four-camera system at 2.0 Mpx, you should have at least 20 Mbps of upload speed at the installation site and a corresponding download speed at the monitoring side.

How to optimize your connection

  • Speed up your internet connection: If your current connection does not meet the requirements, switch to a faster plan.
  • Use compression technologies: Camera systems offer video compression options that can significantly reduce the required connection speed without major impact on quality.
  • Use wired connections: Where possible, use wired connections instead of Wi-Fi for more stable and faster links.
  • Traffic prioritization (QoS): Some routers allow you to set traffic priorities, giving the video stream priority over other traffic.

Can the camera system run on a slower connection?

Fortunately, camera systems take into account that not everyone has an ideal internet connection speed. Thanks to a feature called multistreaming — which allows the system to create multiple streams with different resolutions simultaneously — the system can also be monitored online at lower image quality or frame rate. The stream quality can be easily adjusted directly in the online monitoring apps. However, it is important to keep in mind that lower connection speed can also affect other system functions, which may lead to longer response times or lower operational stability.
